Les 6 et 7 juin prochain, les Français sont invités à aller voter pour les élections européennes, Or, un Français sur trois s'avoue souvent mal ou peu informé sur les rouages et le fonctionnement des institutions sur lesquelles repose la Communauté. Il y a fort à parier qu'ils ignorent aussi que près de 70 % de la production manufacturière de l'UE dépend des substances minières, comme l'a rappelé M. Thierry Salmona, président de l'IMA, lors du lancement de l'opération European Mineral Day 2009, le 14 mai dernier à Prague. La filière représente un CA de plus 50 milliards d'euros, 350 000 emplois et 29 000 sites et carrières en Europe. Et ce n'est pas tout, ces mêmes industries qui dépendent des substances minières représentent 14 % de l'emploi en Europe. Nous n'irons pas jusqu'à demander aux citoyens de s'en souvenir avant de glisser leur bulletin dans l'urne, mais un "minéro-dépendant" averti vaut mieux que deux ignorants. Grâce à l'initiative European Mineral Day 2009, les riverains des sites d'extraction ont l'occasion de découvrir ce qui se produit tout au long de la vie d'une exploitation et le devenir d'un produit minéral, de son extraction à son expédition en passant par sa valorisation.
Les portraits et reportages de ce mois-ci sont d'une part centrés sur les matières premières et d'autre part sur les réfractaires. Vous y découvrirez l'installation livrée par MS au portugais Sifucel et une évaluation du procédé dit en voie sèche par Imerys en Cornouailles. Côté réfractaires, vous ferez connaissance avec Aurock, start-up d'Albi spécialisée notamment dans la fabrication de pièces réfractaires techniques en béton renforcé de fibres métalliques, et avec Bertin Technologies et sa technique d’analyse chimique portative par spectroscopie de plasma induit par laser (LIBS).

On 6 and 7 June, the French are invited to vote for the European elections. The industry represents sales of over €50 billion, 350,000 jobs and 29,000 sites and quarries in Europe. And this is not all as these industries, which depend on mined substances, represent 14% of the employment in Europe. We will not ask fellow citizens to remember it before casting their votes but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Thanks to the European Mineral Day 2009 initiative, neighbours of extractive businesses will have the opportunity of discovering what occurs during the lifespan of a quarry and the life of a mineral substance, from its extraction to its shipment, not mentioning its valorization.
Profiles and reports in this month's issue are focused on the one hand on raw materials and on the other hand on refractories. You will learn more about the plant delivered by MS to the Portuguese Sifucel and you will also read the evaluation of the dry process implemented by Imerys in Cornwall. Regarding refractories, you will be introduced to Aurock, a start-up in Albi, which is specialised in the manufacture of parts made of refractory concrete reinforced with metallic fibres, and with Bertin Technologies and its portative chemical analytical technique by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS).
Do not miss either the interview of Hervé Gastinel, President of Terreal, who reviews the main assets of his group to face the crisis and supply the products adapted to the goals defined by the Grenelle of the Environment and the RT 2012.
