L'argile, le kaolin, le feldspath ou le talc sont les lettres de l'alphabet du céramiste. Les matières premières sont parfois capricieuses et ne se laissent pas découvrir au premier coup de pelle. Vouloir les combiner, comme le fait M. Genetay (p. 50) pour obtenir la coloration optimale en production, peut même déboucher sur des plans de mélange d'une rare subtilité.
Leur impact sur le produit fini est naturellement important. L'article de M. Sanchez (p. 43) passe ainsi en revue l'évolution de la consommation et des prix des matières premières espagnoles dans un contexte de forte mondialisation, et cherche à identifier les causes de certaines inadéquations entre offre et demande.
Les réglementations européennes sous l'effet desquelles tombent les matières premières que vous utilisez ou produisez sont aussi déterminantes, comme l'interview de Mme Wyart-Remy, secrétaire général d'Industrial Minerals Association-Europe (p. 36) finira de vous en convaincre, si toutefois c'était nécessaire !
Comme nous le rappelle M. Eppner en conclusion de son article, il est encourageant de constater que "les usines où des connaissances approfondies sur la composition des principales matières premières et des composants du mélange font défaut, sont de moins en moins nombreuses". En modernisant leurs méthodes de préparation (p. 56), en intensifiant leurs efforts de formation (p. 23) et en ayant recours en externe à des laboratoires de recherche et d'essai qualifiés et indépendants, les industriels mettent toutes les chances de réussite de leur côté.
Clay, kaolin, feldspar or talc are the alpha and omega for the ceramist. Raw materials are sometimes capricious and do not unveil themselves at the first strike of the shovel. The wish to combine them to obtain optimal coloration in production, as does Mr. Genetay (see p. 50), can even lead to mixing schemes of rare subtlety.
Their impact on the finished product is naturally significant. The article of Mr. Sanchez (see p. 43) reviews the changes which have taken place in the consumption and prices of Spanish raw materials in a context of advanced globalisation, and seeks to pinpoint the causes of some imbalances between offer and demand.
The interview with Mrs. Wyart-Remy, Secretary General of Industrial Minerals Association-Europe (see p. 36), will also enhance your conviction –if need be– that European regulations applied to the raw materials you use or produce have a determining impact on them!
As Mr. Eppner reminds us in the conclusions of his article, it is encouraging to see that "plants which do not have a thorough knowledge of the composition of raw materials and the mix constituents, are fewer and fewer". By upgrading their preparation methods (see p. 56), intensifying their training efforts (see p. 23), and using the services of qualified and independent research & testing laboratories, industrialists are doing the best they can to succeed.
